Custody arrangements from a child's point of view can be intense and stressful, so it is important that the child is able to express their opinions, making sure that they feel heard. A misconception is that children do not need to be involved since the adults are the ones who make the the verdict. However, when the child is not included in that process, it may result into them having strong and negative emotions. Children are the ones who face the result of the parent's choices, which can include switching from home to home, staying in one house, and even adjusting to different responsibilities overall. Children may be confused and will take time to adjust to the different expectations of each house hold if the custody is split. For some children this is a big transition not only because of different routines, but also because they get to spend time with their parents less.
